Cefalexin
or LECEF is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, introduced in 1967 by
Eli Lilly and Company. It is an orally administered agent with a similar
antimicrobial spectrum to the intravenous agents' cefalotin and cefazolin. It
is commonly marketed under the trade name Keflex (Lilly), Sporidex (Ranbaxy) or
Nufex.
LECEF
is an antibiotic. It is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the nose,
throat, chest, ears, skin, bones, genitals or bladder. LECEF can also be used
to prevent infection when you undergo specific dental procedures. LECEF belongs
to a group of antibiotics called the cephalosporins.
Typical
usage: Respiratory tract
infections, ENT, urinary tract, gynaecological and obstetric infections.
Gonorrhoea (when penicillin is unsuitable). Skin, soft tissue, bone and dental
infections.
Side
Effects: Hypersensitivity
reactions, interstitial nephritis, vulvovaginitis, dizziness, headache, nausea,
vomiting, diarrhoea, skin reactions, vaginitis, genital moniliasis, vaginal
discharge, neutropenia.
Drug
Interaction: Cephalexin is
known to interact with other drugs like pivmecillinam (HCl), probenecid,
protamine (sulphate), reviparin sodium, streptomycin.
Mechanism
Of Action: Cefalexin, like the
penicillins, is a beta-lactam antibiotic. By binding to specific
penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, it
inhibits the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cell lysis
is then mediated by bacterial cell wall autolytic enzymes such as autolysins;
cefalexin may interfere with an autolysin inhibitor.
